MAUVEpeople are an evolving soul funk combo of Brighton singers and musicians driven directed and fronted by songwriter and keys player Mike Chantler. The songs we bring you are a diverse mix of retro soul, electro funk, Latin jazz and nu disco with plenty of sing-along choruses. Our latest line-up features 4 soulful backing vocalists - Helen, Indy, Jo and Kay - who create close warm harmonies while the live keys and percussion play over groovy backing tracks.
All kinds of influences can be heard flowing thru the music from Stevie to Prince to Cameo to Basement Jaxx to Incognito to Sly and The Family Stone to Moloko with added funky flavours reminiscent of Jamiroquai, Paolo Nutini, John Legend and Gnarls Barkley.
Highlights for the band have included performing at Green Gathering, Kemptown Carnival and fundraisers for RISE and OXFAM . . .
We're currently writing and developing new songs as well as rearranging and revitalising older material and are looking forward to recording and performing these tracks very soon . . .
In various incarnations they've performed as a full band or semi-acoustically at many venues and festivals in and around Brighton including Latest Music Bar x5, Concorde 2, The Hydrant x3, Brunswick Festival, The Prince Albert, Red Lion, The Richmond, Patchfest, The Good Ship, Verda, The Blue Man, Rox Festival, The Mesmerist, Oxjam x3, The World's End, Magpie Eco Festival x2, The Verdict, Brighton Arts Club, Infinity Café, The Gladstone, Vegfest, Zu Studios, The Blind Tiger, Meadowlands, The Hobgoblin, The Honey Club, The Crown & Anchor, Bee's Mouth, The West Hill, Falmer Village Hall, The Providence, Cowley Club, The Thomas Kemp, Sanctuary Café, The Hub, Charles Dickens and The Greys . . . sometimes they're joined by previous backing vocalists as well as Theseus Gerrard, founder member of STOMP, on percussion and are looking forward to playing at festivals in 2015 . . .
HISTORY
The band has seen several line-up changes and many of the backing vocalists who have been involved are on the MAUVE album. Some of the featured singers were borrowed from the truly inspirational Brighton Goes Gospel. Past members include vocalists Rachel Manzi, Edi Mandala, Sandy Holder, Amanda Mitchell, Ursula Smith, Jules Englesman, Charley Maitland, Beth Dumonteil and Jemima Woolgar, bass players Santiago Barrera, Ben Abis and Harry Burton, drummers Joshua Simpson and Jools Owen.
Towards the end of 2011 the band recorded many of the songs they had been performing and Mike spent much of the following year mixing and refining a selection of those tunes which featured on "the MAUVE album" . . .
The songs draw a multitude of influences from many musical genres and from band members as well as Mike’s colourful and varied musical journey which has taken him far and wide from classical to rock to soul to punk to folk and back again with countless recordings and appearances at venues large and small such as The Vortex, Roundhouse and Hackney Empire, plus Glastonbury, Big Green Gathering and Sunrise festivals. Mike also co-produced and released 3 12” singles with 2 Groove Productions and was even a judge for the Brit Awards for 4 years ! More info and music can be found at flowingdeeper.com
During 2012 Mike hooked up with jazzers Tom Alterman, Jack Kendon and Blake Mostyn from The E.M.E and together with Jo Lacey on backing vocals and Ben on bass plus new arrival singer Philippa Howe they formed a new band that gigged around Brighton at venues including The Western Front and on The Bristol Bar Stage in Kemptown Carnival. Sax player John Styles from Quantic joined them briefly in 2013 . . .
